What is Coaching?

Coaching is all the rage these days.  It seems that there's a coach for every occasion - a fitness coach, a health coach, a financial coach - but what exactly does a coach do?  A coach focuses on helping you walk your unique path to success.  Whatever success means for you.  Coaching focuses on where you are presently and where you are headed, with a goal of helping you gain clarity about your vision, eliminate obstacles to your success, accelerate the pace of personal growth and achieve results that empower you to live your best life - personally and professionally.

What is coaching not?

Coaching is not Counseling - While coaching is forward-focused, counseling tends to deal more with past issues in which you may find yourself stuck and struggling.  Coaching may occasionally touch on a topic that occurred in the past, for the purpose of clarifying the present, but the intent of coaching is not to resolve the past.

Coaching is not Consulting As a coaching client, you are responsible for the results you receive as a result of coaching.  Your coach helps you discover how to become more of who you need to be to achieve those results and identify what you may need to do differently.  A consultant takes responsibility for a specific project, acting as a specialist, providing specific deliverables and knowledge.

Coaching is not Mentoring  A coach focuses on the development of people in general, and the development of your unique path in particular.  A mentor guides you towards a specific path of development. A good coach is more interested in helping you onto the unique path that is meant for you - which may be quite different than the path your coach has taken, even though the purpose of your paths may be very similar.  Your coach's job is not to tell you what to do, but rather to help you uncover the answers that lie within you.

Coaching is not Easy!

In order for coaching to be effective, it will require some work on your part.  Prepare to dig deep, be brutally honest with yourself, and answer some tough questions.  Your coach doesn't have the answers - you do! Are you ready?
